Perham Resource Recovery Facility Waste to Energy
The Perham Resource Recovery Facility is a Waste to Energy Facility located in the Industrial Park in Perham.  The facility was reopened in 2001 and a retrofit rebuild was conducted by Barlow Projects with a state of art aerial grate system.  The facility processes approximately 35,000 tons of waste annually using the energy from the waste to generate steam which is sold to Tuffy’s Pet Foods and Bongards’ Creameries to use in their processing. By using the energy in the waste to generate steam for these customers, we are able to reduce the amount of natural gas consumption by approximately 270,190,700 cubic feet.

We are currently looking into expanding the facility so we can supply all of Tuffy’s and Bongards’ steam needs with steam generated from processed waste, further reducing the amount of natural gas usage.

Other positives from processing the municipal solid waste is the reduction in land fill space; for every 1,000 tons of waste processed, we generate 150 tons of ash for a reduction of 85% by weight.  The ash that is generated is sent to the landfill and disposed of in a specially lined cell that collects liquid called leachate of which a portion is returned to the facility and reused in the ash quenching system.

One of the issues that the facility is currently working on is the installation of a new scrubber vessel and the addition of a static mixer. These improvements will make the facility more efficient at scrubbing out potential pollutants.  This project will be completed by April 25th
